Great Ocean Road

Day 1

Pick up at Albury Railway Station and transport to Tallangatta Motor Inn to enjoy a home-cooked dinner.

Day 2

After morning tea, we explore the Bandiana Army Museum – the largest and most diversified military museum in Australia. After lunch, we follow the Murray arm of the Hume Weir up to the historic town of Granya, where we listen to pioneering stories at the Granya Museum and enjoy an old-fashioned afternoon tea delivered with some good old country hospitality.  We then journey to the Hume Weir Wall, here we are able to admire the wall and take in the views of Lake Hume – which holds six times the volume of water contained in Sydney Harbour.  We then travel to an Albury Club for dinner and return to the Motor Inn later that evening.

Day 3

We travel down the Hume Highway, stopping for morning tea and lunch along the way. We travel around Melbourne’s Ring Road stopping at Anglesea for afternoon tea, which is the start of the Great Ocean Road. We then start our almighty journey through the likes of Aireys Inlet and Lorne before settling in the beautiful town of Apollo Bay.

Day 4

We leave Apollo Bay and continue our drive as the scenery transforms into the magnificent limestone cliffs of the Shipwreck Coast, stopping to admire the rugged beauty of the iconic Twelve Apostles – a collection of limestone stacks just off the coast. Our next stop is the Loch Ard Gorge, site of the infamous shipwreck of 1878.  We then drive past stunning scenery on our way to the town of Warrnambool – our overnight stop at the far end of our Great Ocean Road adventure. We enjoy the amazing sound & light show that evening after dinner at the motel.

Day 5

We take a guided tour of the historic port of Warrnambool and discover some of its hidden secrets. If we’re lucky, we might be able to spot a whale or two off the coast as we enjoy our morning tea.  We then retrace our steps back through picturesque Victoria and arrive back to the Tallangatta Motor Inn for dinner.

Day 6

We travel to Allan’s Flat and visit Australia’s first strawberry winery, established in 1975 by Johann Schmidt. Here the Schmidt family has been cultivating fruit wines since the 15th Century and we will be able to taste centuries of experience in a range of sweet, semi-sweet and dry wines and liqueurs.  Depending on the season, we can also sample delicious strawberries fresh from the fields before heading through the gold-rush town of Yackandandah on our way to Albury.  There we will enjoy our lunch on the banks of Lake Hume.  After lunch, we have time to wander the shops in Albury’s main shopping district, before heading back to Tallangatta for afternoon tea and dinner later that evening.

Day 7

After breakfast at the Tallangatta Motor Inn we say our farewells. The bus then takes you for a visit to the famous Peard’s Nursery Café before dropping you at the train station for your journey home!
